Origin Story

Stephen King famously said, “Alone. Yes, that’s the key word, the most awful word in the English tongue. Murder doesn’t hold a candle to it and hell is only a poor synonym”. So it is safe to say that the King of horror himself feared isolation. Edgar Allan Poe was afraid of women, losing himself to obsession, and being buried alive (which wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibility in his time). Even the most famous weavers of nightmares had phobias that ultimately shaped their craft and inspired their genius. But what does fear smell like and who is the wax wielding witch behind all these sinister scents?

I'm Jillian, English lecturer by day, horror fiend by night and inspired candle maker in between. I was called forth to create a unique candle that combined my passions for horror, history, film & lit, as well as quality & sustainability, so The Smell of Fear Candle Co. was born.

I've created candle collections based on scary movies, classic creepy literature, cryptids, & old familiar haunts. All things that are the stuff any horror fan’s strangely comforting nightmares are made of. Scents are pulled directly from sinisterly specific details in each of the terrifying tales.

A pair of new candles are released each month and are based on that month's corresponding theme. Past themes include "He Seemed Like Such a Nice Guy" with candles based on American Psycho and Psycho and "All American Bloodthirsty BBQ" with candles based on Motel Hell and Sleepaway Camp.

There are also curated, monthly subscription boxes from whence you can get your claws on new releases before available to the masses.

Additionally, I can also do custom and wholesale orders catering to those that like to burn brightly on the dark side.

All candles are high-quality, hand-poured in small batches in my lair in Buffalo, NY. I use a paraffin-free, sustainably-sourced, long-burning coconut-beeswax-soy blend and fragrance oils with no phthalates. Cotton based wicks are both lead and zinc free and wooden wicks are sustainably sourced. All the bloodcurdlingly best choices for spine-tingling scents that will haunt your home in the best possible way.

The Smell of Fear is a one wicked woman owned business. All creating, pouring, advertising, label design & printing, packing & shipping is usually a solo endeavor. Know that the bit of eerie extra time it may take to receive your creepy creation is due to the utmost care in crafting before sending off to possess new hosts!

Supporting our communities is also very important to my dark heart, so a portion of profits is donated to various non-profits on a monthly basis.
